Appreciating the Ordinary

Life is beautiful . . .

. . . when you see butterflies dancing across a colourful quilt

. . . in that moment when you finish a task and are pleased with your work

. . . when a project comes together the way it should, and it was easier than you'd hoped!

. . . when you return to a work in progress and realize how close it is to being done

. . . when your tomato plants produce a bumper crop, and you get the fruit before the frost gets them

. . . when an invitation to come over and make salsa arrives at the perfect moment

Pickled onions, peach habanero hot sauce, and green tomato salsa - yummm!

. . . when the doughnuts are so good they start to disappear before you finish making them!

. . . when the opportunity to mentor a new quilter arises, and you say yes!

Make the ordinary come alive
Do not ask your children
to strive for extraordinary lives.
Such striving may seem admirable,
but it is a way of foolishness.
Help them instead to find the wonder
and the marvel of an ordinary life,
Show them the joy of tasting
tomatoes, apples, and pears.
Show them how to cry
when pets and people die.
Show them the infinite pleasure
in the touch of a hand.
And make the ordinary come alive for them.
The extraordinary will take care of itself.

  2. This is a wonderful time of year isn't it. Full of abundance. I've been at meetings away from home for three days and this morning I was up early and took in the early morning sunshine while walking by the edge of Lake Ontario. Wonderful.

  3. What a lovely poem, and your life looks full of good things at the moment. Some beautiful quilting, and I'm intrigued by the one that was easier than it looked - certainly looked quite tricky and very impressive. And talking of impressive - those doughnuts! They look amazing! I've never made them, are they tricky? Do you have to deep fry them?

  4. :) Here's my favorite poem, which I think goes with yours quite nicely (feel free to remove it or let me know if you'd rather I didn't post it):

    Listen to the MUSTN'TS, child,
    Listen to the DON'TS
    Listen to the SHOULDN'TS
    The IMPOSSIBLES, the WONT'S
    Listen to the NEVER HAVES
    Then listen close to me-
    Anything can happen, child,
    ANYTHING can be
