I'm Fine, Thanks.

We've all said it, even when we're torn up inside and held together with chewing gum and baling twine.

"I'm fine, thanks. And, you?"

Stitch, applique, pins.

This is my attempt to depict this phenomenon of politely facing the world while masking our internal turmoil.

When it hangs, the piece will gently move and the slices will be more - or maybe less - apparent, depending on the viewer's perspective.

As usual, this started out as a drawing, which I then enlarged and stitched onto thrifted curtain material.

I made a large-scale drawing and used it to audition fabric for the appliqued elements. If this visual isn't nightmare inducing, I don't know what is!

Here's a shot on the longarm after stitching and trimming. I accidentally made a little hole under the eyebrow - the fabric is definitely a challenge to manage! - so I marked it. I knew I wanted to slice the piece and thought maybe I could cut through the hole to make it disappear.

Of the three similar pieces, Coming Undone, and Troubled, this was the piece I envisioned from the start. I'm glad to have been brave enough to cut into it. I'm so hoping it will hang in a gallery soon, AND that it lives up to my imagined result!

  1. Ooof, this one is very powerful. The past month or so I have felt especially brittle personally, and I think you'll find people really drawn to this when it is on display.
